Chapters 1-3 Ender's Game

Please respond to at least one of the questions below:

1. In the opening pages of the book, Ender observes that "Sometimes lies were more dependable than the truth" (2). What does Ender mean by this? Do you think his observations is correct or incorrect? What does this observation reveal about Ender?

2. Why do you think Ender cries at the end of Chapter 1? Why is he so upset?

3. What type of person is Peter? How do you feel about him so far?

116 comments:

  1. I think that Ender thinks that even though he knows the truth, sometimes a lie, makes him feel a little bit better. Sometimes i think this is true, but it is always better to know the truth, even if the truth hurts. it makes me feel that Ender is a softer, more gentle person. I think Ender is crying because he is wondering what just happend to him to make him do something like that, or he could be crying because he feels bad for the kid he just beat up. Hes so upset because he is a nice person, and he just committed a sinful act.
Peter thinks very high of himself. He knows he is the strongest of the three, and believes that Ender and his sister are "peasants"

    1. Hi, Sam!

I completely agree with you when it comes to the fact that lies cover up the truth, which may be hurtful. We're humans and all humans are pretty much compulsive liars, but when Ender says it's sometimes more dependable than the truth, it's something completely different. When you know something bad's going to happen, and someone's optimistic enough to tell you otherwise (even if it's not true), it give you a little bit of hope, and makes you feel a little bit better, even though you know the real truth is positively going to happen.

And what he's saying is completely true, but untrue, as Sam stated above. It's always better to tell the truth, and to be honest, but sometimes a lie eases the pain for a short amount of time.

Also, this observation doesn't reveal much about Ender, to be honest. He's a human, and as I said, all humans lie. It's a part of life, and it's something we all have to deal with. It just proves he's not out of the ordinary personality-wise, even though we know he's insanely smart.

    2. True that. I still can't believe most of the characters are only six years old! When Ender says he learned arithmetic when he was three, I was shocked. Thirds can be genius's. But why does Graff say "No one wants to be a third, anymore."? Are Thirds some type of new lower class, only with which child your born?

    3. I agree with Sam. when ever my dad would take me to the doctor he would honestly say "that is going to hurt" because once you lie to someone you lose their trust. I would rather have someone tell me the truth so I can depend on it. I think that perhapse Ender is showing the fact that everyone is human and no one is perfect. (maybe it is a foreshadow for someone like peter who has low self estem and will build confindence later, or that the moral of this book will be no one is perfect.) Anyway I agree that telling the truth is a lot better then not telling the truth.

  2. Ender was crying because it seemed to me like he really did not want to do what he did, but if he didn't beat the gang leader up they would just have came at him even harder next time.

    1. Well I agree that it might have been some of the reason he was crying but I believe it was from his brother saying sorry to ender. His brother might have never apologized to ender but for some reason, possibly from his moniter being unpluged just that day, he felt bad for ender cause he had to go through that as well only younger. So this might have been the first time ender ever heard and appology and was so overcome with emotion that he cryed.

    2. Amen to that. That is very true. I completely agree. If i was in his situation I would probably do the same thing if I was in Ender's shoes.

    3. I believe that Ender was just trying to stick up for himself. Sure he felt bad, but he wanted to prove that he wasn't a pushover.

      Delete
    4. He totally is a pushover though. He eats himself up from the inside over mindless issues.

      Delete
    5. I think it's much more then that. He really didn't want to do what he did, but it's more the fact that he really doesn't want to turn into his brother. Every time he does something remotely forceful, physical, demeaning, or violent he sees his brother in himself. He knows that everyone despises and fears his brother because he is violent, and he wants to have respect, but not that kind of respect. Peter is vile, and everything that Ender never wants to turn into, but he can feel himself slowly changing. And as the book goes on, you start to see more and more of it. And even though they are still very different people, it is also very obvious they are related.

  3. I think Ender was crying at the end of chapter one because he didn't want to beat up the kid, and become like his brother Peter, but he knew it was the only way that him and his gang would leave him alone.

    1. I think that your post is probably most accurate so far! I like it, Ender didn't want to become evil like him, how Peter would get at them in harmful ways scaring them. Then Ender just wants Peter to love him

  4. I think that Ender feels that people are more prone to tell lies to make a person feel better than tell the truth. He is saying that people are more likely to lie about the inevitable than to be brutally honest. I think this observation is sadly accurate. Ender isn't quick to trust. He is very thoughtful, and analyzes everything he does and hears.

Ender had been tormented by his brother many times before, and he knew how it felt to be beat up. After he beat someone up he felt bad for inflicting that same pain he hates so much on someone else. He doesn't like the way his brother Peter treats him, and he feels as though he is turning into him.

Peter is a very hardhearted, jealous person, and he puts on the angry, tough guy act. But in reality, he is weak. He feels bad for what he does, but he can't change his actions now or he'll be portrayed as a "softie". I don't like his prideful attitude, but I cant help feeling bad for him.

    1. I agree with you. I think Peter is the weakest character we have met so far, and probably will meet in this book. I think Ender knows this and that is another reason why he's so worried about turning out like Peter. He doesn't just want to not be as violent as him, he also doesn't want to be weak.

      Delete
    2. I completely agree when you say that Ender feels as though people are more prone to tell lies to make a person feel better. I think that he might be more scared of the truth than anything.

    3. You are very accurate in all that you said Micah. I think that Ender doesn't want to be like his brother Perter because he has been tortured and knows that getting beaten up is hurtful. I think that without his monitor, at first he didn't know what would happen until he saw that he beat up that kid. He knew then that he is strong and now he could defend himself. How would he defend himself otherwise; he couldn't call for help. So either way even though he doesn't want to be like his brother, he has to be because otherwise he would be a total pushover. I think what Enderis doing is good and if I were strong like him I would defend myself...but since I'm not very strong I can't do that. Hah!!

  5. I think Ender is scared he will be treated differently if he tells the truth. He cries because he got a sensation to beat up a boy. He didnt want to but he knew he had to stand up for himself.

Peter sounds like a big guy who thinks hes all that and doesnt like his siblings

  7. I think what Ender means is that sometimes the lie is better than the actually truth and it can be true for certain cases. I think this can be either a wrong or right answer. This shows that Ender is somewhat of a quiet and strong kid even though he feels as if he is too different since he is a third child of the family. he brother on the other hand, can be a jerk but he has his reasons.. i think that peter is a strong willed kid even though he has strong feelings toward his brother,i do think that he will change later in the book

  8. I think Ender believes that lies are more dependable than the truth because he doesn't want to believe the truth. Ender means that even though he knows it's a lie, he tries to believe the lie because he doesn't want to believe the truth. I think this observation is correct and it reveals that Ender is an ordinary human.
I think Ender cries at the end of chapter one because he knows that he isn't the type of person that would beat up another kid, he gets upset because he feels bad.
Peter is a know-it-all older brother that thinks he is better than his siblings. I feel like Peter's attitude is going to come back and bite him in the butt later on in the book.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think why Ender thinks its sometimes better to rely or depend on lies more then the truth, is because when your kid you want to believe everything your told so you don't really want to know the truth if its something that's bad so sometimes a lie makes you feel better then to really face the truth. It gives you a sense of comfort. I sometimes think this is true in life but I would rather know the truth even if it hurts, it makes Ender seem like a kind and gentle person who cares about other peoples feelings.
I think he cries at the end of chapter 1 is because he knows what he did was wrong and he doesn't want to be like his brother.
Peter is a typical older brother but because Ender is better at other things then Peter it makes Peter angry and jealous because when your the older sibling you want to be the best at everything and because Peter is stronger he thinks hes the better child.

    ReplyDelete
  10. To me, Ender believes a lie is easier to accept than the truth because they don't know what to expect or how to react, so having someone tell you a lie could prepare you for what could happen.

But as for Peter, I believe he is quite bipolar and should chill out a little bit

  11. I think that Peter is a messed up kid and that when he goes and kills and is mean to his brother and sister then hurts them. Ender and Valentine say how they want Peter to like them and later on in the book when Valentine asks if Ender would save her and he doesnt realize it, its pretty funny :) ha

    1. I agree with chance. Peter is a punk to his siblings, but I think Peter will later on In the story show more respect to his siblings like most older brothers do when they get older.

  12. I believe that Ender starts to cry because he is afraid. He is afraid that that ugly violent side of him will take over him just like it did to his brother. He doesn't like the person he might become.

Even though he had to defend himself It freaked him out that he is becoming more like his brother.

  13. peter seems like a total jerk who is absolutely jealous of ender because he had his monitor on longer than him. he also thinks that he is the best thing ever and no one else is allowed to be better than him but if someone even thinks they are better than him he beats them up

  14. Peter seems like on the inside he really cares about Ender but on the outside he wants to act all tough and push Ender around. 2. Okay A.Seiber, I agree with you except I also disagree with you. I believe Peter isn't afraid to show his feelings. He chooses not to because maybe he doesn't want to have an actual relationship with Ender. He is jealous that he had the monitor on longer than him. Peter is possibly annoyed with how sheltered Ender is. Although, he does love Ender. He feels guilty how he treats his brother.

    3. Yeah, he doesn't want to show his true feelings to Ender, therefore he is afraid of what might happen between them. He is to scared to break down and tell Ender.

  15. 3.
I believe Peter is a lonely and cruel person but secretly he loves Ender and has a soft side. Although he never shows that side of him. He acts tough in front of people. It also seems like he enjoys tormenting other people and making them miserable. Im guessing that Peter will eventually show that side of him during the end of the story.

  16. How do I feel about peter? Well... Obviously we all know he has a vicious side he shows to his sibling and the lighter side is shown to his parents. Does he actually like his siblings or not. the night after Ender got his monitor off Peter told Ender he loved him at like four in the morning. Does he really or was he just a little wacko. Who fights like animals when their 6 and 10. This world is weird... Hah the 70's.

    1. Part of me thinks that Peter might be trying to help Ender. He might have been told to be mean to him because it would make him stronger. When Peter told Ender that he was sorry and that he loved him, I don't think that was meant to be heard by Ender. I think that he really does love his siblings.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Hayley. It would make sense if Peter was told to do that, to be mean to Ender. But even if he wasn't that is just how older brothers are. I think Peter is extremely jealous of Ender which explains why he is so mean. But on the night Peter told Ender that he was sorry and that he loved him brought out the soft side of Peter. I feel like Peter wants to be Enders best friend but is too stubborn to admit that he is wrong for being so rude. And so he continues to take out his frustration on Valentine and Ender. All in all I think Peter truly loves Valentine and Ender. And would do anything to protect them.

      Delete
    3. Peter is a very dangerous kid because he is smart and he can only see the situation from his perspective. If Ender didn't have Valintine he would probably already be dead.

      Delete
    4. If Ender didnt have Valentine he would still be alive. The I.F. wouldnt let Peter just kill Ender while he still has his monitor and even when they do take t off he is still under surveilance. But if Ender didnt have Valentine he probably wouldve turned ino another Peter.

      Delete
    5. I agree with with Hayley and Jayley(: The reason behind Peter telling Ender that he loves him in the night in order for Ender not to hear is something a kid would do because he doesn't want to admit it and be recognized for it. I can see where Peter comes from in a way because once your doing something, it's kind of hard to change the way you are and you treat others. If someone sees you in one way and they think that you will always be the same, then it's hard to change who you are. Even if we don't see it, maybe Peter wants to change and be a better brother. He probably does love his brother and sister but he just doesn't want them to know because in their eyes he is the tough one. And I definitely think that he won't ever harm them to a point of killing them.

  17. I believe that at the end of Chapter 1, Ender cries because he is afraid that he won't be able to watch out for himself without his monitor. I also believe that Ender cried, because he was afraid that someone from the school, would tell on him for beating up Stilson.

  18. This is fun lol.. Okay, what I think about Peter is in his situation is interesting and crucial when he said he will eventually kill Ender and joked about it. Then later he told Ender that he felt sorry and told him he loved him during the night. What got into my mind is that Peter can be a dangerous character. He's a smart kid but he can be ruthless for what he had done to Ender. There is good in Peter, apologized for what he had done to Ender. What I don't get is why Peter did this. Is it because that's who he is or because of Ender being the Third?

    1. ^ Gabe, Peter did and does all of those things to Ender because he is jealous of Ender because he had his monitor longer than he did.

    2. I think that Peter is just using his brain to manipulate Ender into thinking that Peter is better than Ender. Even though Ender says that he hates Peter all he wants is for Peter to love him and be his big brother.

      Delete
    3. Ender already thinks Peter is horrible though so it doesn't make any sense to say Peter is trying to trick him into thinking that Peter is better than him. But I do think that Ender wants Peter to love him.

  19. 1) Ender obviously understands people. sometimes it qis easier to predict what someone is really saying just by their tone of voice or body language, or even because they have lied before. It shows that Ender has been in perhapse the same situation for a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think what Ender means by "sometimes lies we're more dependable than the truth," is that a lie can be easier to believe than the truth. But if you know that a person is lying, you can rely on the lie as being a prediction for the future.
Ender was crying at the end of the chapter because he didn't want to end up like his brother. He thought that having his monitor out would make people like him better, and that he would be accepted by Peter, but it seems that Gavin it out his soon exactly the opposite.
I am not sure of what I think about Peter yet. I think he is wallis of Ender, but I also think that he might actually be tryin to help Ender, and make him stronger.

    1. I agree with hailey on all accounts except the last. I don't feel like picking on Ender as a means of toughening him is Peter's goal. His anger seems to come from a resentful place. Peter seems like a real monster if you ask me.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you all except for the last section as well. Peter most definitely did toughen Ender up, but not purposefully. Peter's aggression for Ender comes from jealousy. From knowing that Ender is smarter than him, and more clever than him, and succeeded in places Peter failed.

    3. Peter is a mean person who has no means of toughening up Ender. He's just a heartless old jerk who only cares about himself. Real talk.

    4. First off, Hayley you need to be cautious about autocorrect. I agree though. Lies sometimes are easier to try to live by instead of the truth which can hurt. I think Peter has jealousy issues just because he feels like he was a failure. In this society it's a disappointment to have a third child and Peter resents Ender for being a third. Peter may have a heart for waking up and telling Ender that he loved him though.

I think Peter feels like he wasn't good enough, and that is why he picks on Ender. Although he puts his brother through so much, I feel bad for him.

    1. I think that you're right about the fact that Peter doesn't feel good enough, because that's how people who pick on others feel. But I think that there has to be something else going on with Peter. Ender's a third, (hated by everybody almost) so there's not much that peter has to be jealous of or take away from Ender. I think that Peter likes to be in control, and when there comes a time when he can't be, he takes it out on Ender.

  22. I think Ender was crying because he is scared he will become just like his brother, Peter. He doesnt want to. But he is afraid that his violent side may take over. At the end of chapter one, he cries because he beat that kid up. But what other choice did he have? He wasnt just going to stand there and take the bullying. He had to defend himself, even if he did go a little to far with it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think Ender cries because he isn't able to be himself. He can't control his own actions. he has to stand up for himself which pushes him to be something he is not. He also doesn't have any freedom. He is a third and thirds do not have rights, just as his brother said earlier. he can not do anything and so the only thing left to do is cry, everyone has to get their emotions out some how. also his brother might have something to with why he is crying. he realizes that because of the situation he is in he is becoming a lot like his brother. he is being taught how to lose emotion and feelings for others and is being trained to kill.

    1. Agreed. Also I didn't quite realize this until later in the book, but the kid is six. I can't imagine any other six year old going through what he is going through and not crying. Not only that, but he is a third and he is a freak to other kids. They don't recognize him is valuable or will one day save the world, they just see him as an extra.

  25. It was interesting to read people's thoughts to Enders comment about lies being more reliable, however my first thought when reading that was that he could tell when people were lying, and if he knew they were lying, then it meant that he knew what was actually going to happen, where as, when people tell the truth, it could always change

I think that Ender cries at the end of chapter one because, despite the fact that he did it out of self defense (kind of, because he didn't want to get beat up after) he didn't want to be a brute, like he thought his brother was

Peter is an interesting situation. He shows the not-so-obvious signs of a person with low self esteem, and as a reaction to that, he lashes out. It is my personal opinion that he thinks in not so much of a "Why is he so great" way, and more in a "why wasn't I good enough" way. We see at the end of the chapter that he feels regretful for him actions and therefore isn't doing it out of coldheartedness... Maybe he's trying to prove to himself that he is good enough, just not it the right way.

  26. I think that Peter is one of those people that feels neglected. It have been that because his parents wanted third child that he felt he wasn't good enough. r maybe when he was in his training he felt like he had to prove himself worthy, but wasn't good enough. Thea point is, he isn't confident in himself and so he tries to take other down so he can feel better about himself. He probably feels hurt inside. I think that he needs to realize that he is important. I bet that some time in the future or later on in the book Peter will realize that he is potential for good and ends up helping his brother in the end.

    1. I think that Peter starts to cry not because he feel bad for the kid but because that by doing this he made himself feel like Peter. I think the Ender feels for the kid he beat up because he himself is beat up by Peter all the time.

  27. Peter seem jealous of Ender because he got his monitor out at the age 6 and Peter had it not as long. Peter is mean to Ender and his sister like when Peter made Ender play Bugger and Atstornaut and he made Ender the bugger because he is a third. Valentine tried to stop Peter but he just says no and pins Ender on the floor. Peter is jealous of Ender basically.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think the Ender felt isolated. He was not the biggest and greatest person and as soon as his monitor was out and he was considered to be just like everyone else his state of mind changed. When he began to think that he was like his brother Peter it frightened him and I think that his feelings cam from being Isolated so long. He was a child and should have Lived as if he was.

  29. I believe Ender was crying because he lost his monitor now he has no one to watch over him and to be able to protect him from his brother Peter. Waaaaa )': how sadddd. 30. What exactly did Peter mean when Ender almost made it when it came to the monitor being removed? I understand that Ender was the only child that hade the monitor till he was six but, what do you think would have been the other result if Ender never had the monitor removed?

    1. If he never had the monitor removed, he wouldnt have to defend himself with fighting. There would always be someone to look after him. But being that he got it removed, its up to him to defend himself.

    3. If Ender never had the monitor removed, it would mean he passed the test. He got into the Battle School. But because he got his monitor removed, people believed that he didn't make it. This made him a target for bullying for many reasons. The other students could have been jealous of him. Because he is super smart, or because he had a watching eye over him for 6 years of his life. They also held resentment towards him because he was a Third child. And having a third child was highly looked down upon. They beat him up because, until he got his monitor removed, there were always soldiers watching him, feeling his emotions, sensing everything he sensed, and they could run in at any time to protect Ender's life because they need him to be in Battle School.

  32. Peter reminds me of those males who follow the rule: ‘Might Makes Right.’ He believes that since he is the strongest, that automatically means he’s the bestest and greatest of the three of kids. Peter is, simply, jealous of Ender, of Ender’s… ‘specialness’ so to speak. Ender had his moniter in longer than Peter; Ender was smarter than Peter; but than, Ender was weaker than Peter, so Peter tormented Ender for the things he was better at than Peter. But at the same time that Peter tormented Ender, I think that Peter felt bad for what he did, yet couldn’t stop his torment of Ender(which was why he apologized to Ender when he thought he was asleep).

  34. I think that when Ender says that lies are better than the truth he is saying that sometimes its better to hear a lie than to hear the truth. Even though the truth can hurt it can make you feel better to hear a lie. I do and dont agree with what he has to say becausei would rather hear the truth than be told a lie. He doesnt want to be hurt phisicaly and emotionaly so he would rather hear lies than the truth.

When Ender cries in chapter 1 he keeps getting called third. Peole were only allowed to have two children but they had three so now Ender is being made fun of by being called third. In chapeter one his is also getting his moniter taked off, so people are making fun of him for that also.

Peter is jealous because his brother Ender gets to go to theIF (international fleet). Peter wishes itcould be himbut his isnt as good as hisyounger brother. Peter should be happy for his younger brother but instead he makes funof him just because heis jealous.

    1. I completely agree with Katie's opinion. As I was reading the book, I too thought that Ender would rather hear lies than the truth because the truth would hurt him more than the lies that Peter tells him. Although in Enders sitiuatn this may seem true, I don't agree with it. I would rather be told the truth and be hurt instead of being lied to and knowing that the person wouldn't be honest and tell me the truth anyways. That's what would hurt the most.

  35. As I read the book, I noticed that Peter is putting on the tough guy act and nothing more. I really don't think he actually means to harm Ender or Valentine. In, I believe, chapter 2, when Ender went to bed crying. Peter went to the head of Ender's bed and said to Ender that he knew how he felt and so on. Perhaps Peter isn't as bad as he's thought to be.

I don't particularly like Peter, he's a big brute. And I'm glad that Ender is the main character instead of him. But it makes me sad that he puts Ender thought so much pain

  36. It really surprised me when Peter came into Enders room and whispered that he was sorry and that he loved him. I was wondering if that was foreshadowing something that might happen in the future.

  37. My thought why he was crying at the end of chapter one is that, he was having conflicting thoughts. One is that he knew he had to beat him up so that they would leave him alone, but on the other hand he also knew that this was probably the way that his brother would most likely react to the same situation.

Peter seems like the older brother who obviously thinks hes better just because he's older, being jealous that he is not the smartest, didn't have the monitor on the longest, but at the same time he also feels sympothy since his brother just lost his, so like everyone else he has his good and bad days.

  38. I think Peter is inconsiderate when it comes to Andrews feelings and he has a cruel sense of humor. Peter thinks he is more important than Ender just because he is the first child and not a third. Once Peter admitted that he loved Enders when he was sleeping it gave the reader a different view of Peters personality.

  39. I think Peter is a huge bully who likes to see the weekness of others and pick on it. Peter himself must be insecure if he feels the need to do that, to destroy weekness instead of encourage it. I was really surprised although when Peter came into Enders Room and told him he loved him. Perhaps this shows another side of Peter that we don't see. The destroying of weekness (in his mind) to make them better or stronger in someway. Either that or he's just a huge jerk. Probably a little of both.

  40. I think Peter is someone who wants a lot of attention and will do whatever he wants to get that attention, I also think that he is very jealous of Ender, that's why he bullied and threatened him because he wants to feel in control. Even though he apologized to Ender, I still do not think any different of him because he could do it again at any time.

    1. Ya Peter is just an attention rhymes with door and ya peter didn't meen what he said to Ender, I bet Peter is going to kill Ender or something.

  41. I think that Ender cries at the end of chapter one because he is afraid of what he will become. He says, "I'm just like Peter. Take my monitor away and I am just like Peter. This shows not only the fear that Ender holds in becoming like Peter, But for the fear that he's becoming a 'terrible person'. He's been hurt by his borther many times before and knows what it feels like to be in that position. Ender is still a good human being who does not want to do any harm to anyone, but will stick up for himself when he needs to. And i think that's what scares him now that the monitor is gone.

  42. The type of perrson Peter is in my opinion is a mean and clever little boy, he acts sweet in front of adults and his parents, but in front of Ender and Valentine he is very disturbed and needs to go to a mental hospital...in my opinion.

  43. I believe because Ender beat up Stilson, he fears he's going to become exactly like his brother. I'm sure, in a way, he also starts to feel Peter's pain. He understands now how Peter must have felt when he had his monitor taken off. Not only the sense of rejection, and the knowledge that he wasn't good enough, but also the critizism, the teasing, the mocking. Just like Ender, odds are people beat Peter up at school, or tried to, and that is what turned him into such a monster. And Ender now comes to realize Peter's mindset 'eat or be eaten', or in his case, beat or be beaten. And that is exactly what scares him, what leads him to cry, what causes him so much inner turmoil. Because he knows that unless he wants to end up like Stilson, he has to become a Stilson. A Peter. A bully.

  44. Uhm Ender was crying because he was all like" I didn't wanna have to beat him up but I had to prove a point to all those kids that if they messed with me they will get beat up too and kicked in the crotch" and peter is just the worst type of kid there is I mean who just tells there siblings that they are going to kill them and how he will lie about it, I mean Peter is just one sick person and also Ender is afraid he will be like Peter and that is exactly not what he wants to happen

  46. Peter is the kind of kid who enjoys watching other people in pain. Which is proved when he sits on top of Ender and almost kills him then! Acts like it was all a joke! So far my outlook on Peter is pretty poor he seems ruthless and a cold blooded killer at the age of 10 which is messed up!

  47. To me Peter seems Kinda like a jerk. After toutring His brother and threatening his sister he doesn't seem that loving, but when he came up to Ender when he was sleeping and told him that he actually lives him it seems that Peter actually loves Ender but doesn't want it to seem that way.

    1. I agree Matthew, Peter is a very cruel brother and does not treat his sister or third brother with an respect and refuses. After apologizing to Ender In his sleep it actually seemed like he had some decency.

  48. Ender started crying at the end of chapter one because he beat up the bully because he wanted to prove a point because the bully would've kept going after Ender. He cried because he discovered he is just like Peter by being a jerk, sovender started crying because he doesn't wanna be a jerk.

  49. Wooow Matthew you hit that right on the nail head! Ender was being monitored longer than normal and once he got that removed he felt vulnerable and unprotected. He needed to establish that he wasn't to be messed with, which explains the kicking even after he had won the fight. Once he had realized what he had done, Ender connected his actions with something Peter might do.... Which made him cry because he didn't want to be like Peter.

  51. There's a lot of things that happen in chapter 1-3 but I don't get why Peter said sorry and I love you to Ender after he tried to kill him. I thought he was just a cold blooded person. I know thier brother's but still.

  52. These chapters are my favorite because the author does a really good job expressing the language of children. Honestly, the language was the only reason why I remembered they will such little kids.
I don't like Peter entirely, but I find him interesting. He is so smart that he would devise ways to kill his siblings. It's scary to have a smart and violent person around.

  53. After reading chapter 1-3 I realise that this book is really easy to read, unlike other book it's easy to understand but thre's some part that confuse me.

I don't like how the characters are mostly children but thats the thing that makes the story interesting.

Also I expect the characters to be like our age but it's alright as long I'm enjoying this book

  54. When Ender says "sometimes lies are more dependable than the truth" I think he means that the truth isn't always nice, so you can lie to change things around to the way you want them to be. When you lie you can eventually live up to the lie you said and make it real so it isn't a lie after all.

  55. I think what Ender means when he says, "sometimes lies are more dependable than the truth" is that you can understand somebody better when they lie to you than when they tell you the truth because when they lie they are exposing what they don't want you to know and that can be better than the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ender is very sensitive. It's a mystery that he doesnt do anything back to Peter. I know violence is not the way, but sometimes some violence must be shown to stop others from harming you. Ender crying is the only thing he can do. No one believes that Peter is anything other than a sweet little boy.

  57. Peter is not that great of a person. I think that he likes to try to be better than everyone else and think he can get away with everything

    ReplyDelete
  58. Why did Peter, say such kind words to Ender while Ender was supposed to be sleeping?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think the reason Ender thinks a little lie is better than telling the hard truth is because he wouldn't want to hurt someone. I think Ender was crying because he doesn't want to hurt anyone, but he feels like he has to end something or it can become much worse later on.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I agree with Caleb. I think Ender was crying because he didn't want to hurt anyone, because it makes him fell like Peter when he does and it scares him, but he needs to or something bad could happen to him and the human race would be doomed.

  61. I think Peter is someone who is emotionally handicapped and only knows how to express his feelings through violence. He's frustrated that his younger brother is more successful, and I feel like he tries to weaken Ender with abuse in an attempt to bring Ender down to his level or lower. Peter definitely shows a need to rule over people.

    ReplyDelete
  62. 1. I think Ender says that lies are more dependable than the truth because people, especially adults to children, always choose the easy way and candy-coat reality to make it easier to swallow. In this, he means that people will always lie, and always say things to keep your emotions at a homeostatic level. It's raw honesty that's unexpected, especially in a world that's so closely monitored. Truth is erratic, organic, but lies are always formed to fit your preconceived notions of 'normal'. And that's why people are rarely honest- because the world can't take it, and Ender, at the tender age of 6, has caught on.

  63. Peter seems like a really evil person but at the same time it seems he has no control over it. Peter seems like he really wouldn't mind killing Ender or Val who are his siblings and only a monster would be like that, but also at the same time he tells Ender he loves him (while he thinks Ender is asleep) so that confuses me on how Peter really his and makes it seem like he doesn't really have control over his actions. All in all I don't like Peter, he hurts his siblings for fun and because he doesn't like Ender, that just makes me hate him.

    ReplyDelete
  64. i believe that everything that enders does in chapters 1-3 shows the readers that he is a thinker, and wants to scare the other kids, so that they wont mess with him.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I also agree with caleb Ford, Ender really didnt want to hurt any one so he began to cry after he beat up the bully at his school, but the only reason he beat up the bully so bad was to prove a point to the other bullys at his school.

    ReplyDelete
  66. ender cries because he is afraid that he is just like his brother peter. ender never wanted to hurt stilson, he just wanted to be left alone. but ender did what he had to to make sure the other bullys wouldn't come back. also I agree with william that this shows that ender thinks everything through.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ender cries because he sees that he has that side of him that reminds him of peter and he hates peter and is afraid of turning into him. he only hurt the boy because he wanted to be left alone and this was his only shot to get rid of him once and for all. this is why he's upset.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The reason Ender cries at the end of the chapter is because he had just gotten his monitor off. Stilson could not keep away from bothering Ender, and so Stilson and his gang want to beat Ender. When Ender defends himself he ends up hurting Stilson really bad. He brakes his arm. Ender was in shock of what he had done, in my opinion, and just defends himself like any other would. All he wanted was to be left alone, and since he didnt get that, he had to have someway of telling them to go away. After he hurts Stilson, he realizes what he's done. Then he leaves into a corridor and cries. He thinks that without his monitor he will now be just like his brother Peter.

Peter is a violent kid who just wants to torture Ender just because Ender is smaller than him. Peter thinks he can overpower Ender just like Stilson can. Every little thing he does to Ender makes a difference in the way that we see Peter. I really dislike Peter in the way that he is because why would he want to torture his brother in such a way, and threaten to kill both Ender and Val? What kind of things go through his mind. This is a horrible child who needs psychiatric help because this is no ordinary child, and if Ender hadn't gone away I'm sure Peter would be the same.

  69. I find it interesting that the government discourages religion, but the book was written at the time of the U.S.S.R who discouraged it and in the book are still around. look at today some states still allow creation to be tough in biology classes, and in the future if a new form of life was discovered it would cause a lot of contradictions with religions, and it would make a lot of people very angry, its taken decade for evolution to be tough in schools and yet 63% of americans don't believe it, so???

But the population control baffles me, they are at war, they have the technology to colonize other planets, the government should be encouraging population growth for their to be more soldiers, builders of ships and incase of defeat people to carry on the human race.

  70. Peter seems like a really big bully who is obsessed with power. He acts like he doesn't care about what people think, and he throws people around. Especially Ender, he does this to hide his weaknesses. Because behind the biggest awfullest jerk, always lies the biggest baby of them all who is afraid to show there feelings.
